CadMouse on Linux?

Post by feklee » Wed Apr 22, 2015 1:36 pm

With the dedicated middle button, it looks like the perfect mouse for Linux users. In fact it is the only conventional mouse with a dedicated mouse button and scroll wheel that I found on the web.
  • Does the CadMouse work on Linux? (x.org)
  • Can sensitivity be adjusted? (mouse cursor should not move too fast)
  • Does the scroll wheel work?
  • Does the middle button work?

Hi feklee,

the CadMouse is recognized as a standard mouse on Linux. The middle mouse button and the scroll wheel are working as usual. I don't know if there is a possibility on Linux to adjust the sensitivity. If there is a generic possibility then yes. But 3Dconnexion does not provide a special driver for the CadMouse on Linux.

Hope this answers your questions. :)

This is great news. At work we use Maya on linux. It would be a good selling point to say the mouse is recognised as a standard 3-button mouse in linux, even if there's no driver yet for fancy extra features.

@UtaSH - do you know if it is likely to work in Kubuntu?

No, sorry. We only support RedHat and SuSE. No testing on other Linux distributions.

Since the official Linux tools from 3Dconnexion do not work at all on any recent Linux distribution, I have written my own tool to adjust CadMouse firmware settings.

You can find it at https://github.com/lachs0r/cadmousectl

It also exposes a few settings that are not available with the official tools.
However, be warned that this tool is not supported by 3Dconnexion. Use at your own risk.

To get some of the more advanced features (like per-application actions), you can use your window manager settings (e. g. KWin has extensive scripting support) or tools like evrouter.
