10 beta pan and zoom function different between 2d and 3d?

Postby ewalberg » Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:41 pm

So the 10 beta software seems super cool, but reading the quick promos for it talks about rotating the puck forward and backward for scrolling up and down and twisting it left and right for zoom. This seems TOTALLY unintuitive... please tell me it's not the only way it works...

Now i'm not saying you couldn't learn to make it intuitive, but considering i'm someone using it for CAD for years and is already totally trained to shift it left and right to pan left and right, to shift it for and aft for zoom in and out, and to push down and up to pan up and down... why on earth not use this same functionality format across aps?!? It would require no re-learning if panning and zooming was consistent between all aps. Then if you want to add twisting and yawing (which fundamentally has no function in a 2d app), you can use those as ways of performing mouse clicks, "go back", or other activities.

As it stands i have no interest in trying to learning and recall efficiently 2 different ways of zooming and panning, but i sure like the idea of functionality across all apps. Great idea for sure... but i'd end up never getting it straight.

Sorry if this is old topic stuff. First time on this forum, and not savy to vocabulary to know what to search to find old threads. If nothing else, some keys words to search if this is old news would be a good help.

You can assign each axis to do whatever you want. Everything is user customizable.

We have pre-assigned them one way or another because that made sense to us.

We have found that people often have a different expectation of how the axes willl work in 2D applications (think spreadsheet), since they are migrating from 2D mouse control in those applications. Therefore we have assigned tilting of the cap, that controls the mousewheel functions to move in the same direction as the mousewheel. Zoom doesn't exists on a 2D mouse so we put it on an axis that doesn't exist on a 2D mouse. Pan left/right/up/down should match what you are used to having with a 2D mouse.

3D apps are completely different. Those are consistent with the way the 3D mouse has always worked in 3D apps. Push away to move away, push down to move down, etc. As if you were holding the camera or object in your hand.

If you don't like the pre-assigned values, just open 3DxConfig, select the profile for your application and reassign them. Your changes will be applied when you hit the Apply button.

Oh, thanks for the thorough response. that's great news. When i get my head above water i'll download the application and give it a shot...

Side qustion, so it sounds like the 10 beta is already pretty well ironed out for me using solidworks2011 on a Spacepilot Pro with WIN 7 on a 64 bit machine?
